A Great Read
Steve Lopez' novel "The Soloist: A Lost Dream, an
Unlikely Friendship, and the Redemptive Power
   of Music"  (Putnam, 2008)

If you haven't seen the movie "The Soloist" it's definitely one you should plan
to rent as soon as it's released.  Several Mental health organizations have held
screenings of the movie.  It covers mental illness and homelessness, the story
is certainly eyeopening.
